Security: Apple fixes big security bugs in Mac OS X

Apple Security issueAugust 24, 2010, 07:01 PM —  IDG News Service —

Apple has released a security update to its Mac OS X operating system, fixing a number of critical security issues in the software.

The update, released early Tuesday afternoon, Pacific time, fixes 13 bugs in various OS X components, including core components such as Apple Type Services and CFNetwork. It's Apple's fifth OS X security update this year.

Many open-source OS X components are also patched, including Samba, PHP and ClamAV software.

At least six of the bugs theoretically could be exploited by attackers to run unauthorized software on the Mac, Apple said.

Microsoft's Windows operating system remains the favorite target of online attackers, but security experts say it's always a good idea to install these security updates as quickly as possible, no matter what the product.

Missing Telephone numbers on Site

Calm Response Contact Telephone Number, is now in the CloudsSome visitors to this site may be looking for a Telephone Number to contact Calm Response?

Well, we have removed it!

There are several reasons for this:

  • Over the last 2 years we have received one/two calls a month using it, if lucky, and they are normally cold calls to tell us why we should not miss out on "the bargain of a lifetime".
  • All of our clients and Partners have our "Private" mobile (cell) numbers and call these directly, and
  • All new prospective Clients/Partners are handled directly by a Senior Manager and have direct access to them (24/7) .
  • Our clients and Partners can be found in locations spreading from Cape Town, South Africa (GMT + 1) to Vancouver, Canada (GMT - 8) and all points inbetween.
  • Client telephone support is provided by regional support centers, which clients can access via:
    • referring to their Account Manager.
    • or by right clicking the "CalmResponse Icon" located in the right-hand side of their screens near the Clock.
  • With the exception of the Support centers, our team are based in the clouds.
  • The majority of our new clients came to us either via referrals, Web inquiries or via LinkedIn.
  • We think that having a fixed telephone number (i.e. 0151, 0800, 0845 etc) made us seem regional, whereas we support clients through Europe, UK and North America.

The telephone number has been removed for several months now and as far as we can see, it has had no effect on our business, other than allowing us to deal with client requests more efficiently. However, we will continue to review this issue.

Security Check: The invisible spy in every office?

The security issue in your officeImagine there was someone in your office who:

  • Had embarrassing photographic quality evidence of your Christmas Party antics,
  • Detailed breakdowns of your personal and business financial position (from Bank Statements and Credit Card bills to 5 year forecasts and detailed Audit reports, year in, year out).
  • Full details of all legal agreements entered into, plus changes.
  • Detailed knowledge of all your clients, suppliers and competitors including copies of all communication sent by mail or fax.
  • Detailed information on all of your staff, including their Addresses, Evaluations and Salary information.

Say "hello" to your New Security issue, Who, in all probability:

  • I have seen in every office I have been in since 2000.
  • Will walk out of your office, sometime in the next 3 years, taking all this information with them in digital form.
  • Is overlooked when it comes to security audits and user access.
  • Will leave you legally responsible.

The culprit: The Office Networked Printer/Fax/Scanner/Photocopier, the essential key in all offices and work-groups. Allowing you to print, copy, scan, fax, and digitally send information using a reliable, cost-effective device but to do this it has a hard drive!

Canon warns of digital printer security issue

17 June 2010

You wouldn't class digital printers as being a security risk but, according to Quentyn Taylor, director of information security with Canon, high-end multi-functional printers pose a serious security risk when they come to the end of their working lifetime.

The problem, he says, stems from the fact that all data scanned, processed, printed or similarly manipulated on a high-end printer  system is spooled and stored on the machine's hard disk.

On a high-end digital printer , the scanned images are stored in an unencryted format - and when the unit is disposed of by its first owner, anyone in the know can extract this data and generate thousands of images that have been processed and printed on the unit.

"People don't realise that most office [high-end] printers are actually a server. I always ask my audiences at conferences whether they know this and a good 40 per cent say they don't", said Taylor.

The security problem is made worse by the fact that most high-end printers are usually commissioned by facilities managment teams in most major companies, rather than the IT department, he says. "It's a bit like the old phone systems of the 1970s. FM teams installed them back then, but now we have VOIP, there's a security issue that needs to be addressed. It's the same with high-end printers", he explained............
